Canada Announced Support for Turkish and Syrian Temporary Residents
As part of its response to the situations in Turkey and Syria, Canada gives priority to the resettlement of refugees and the temporary and permanent residency applications of earthquake victims. We are also making it easier for Turkish and Syrian nationals living in Canada to extend their stays.
Distinguished The Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, has announced new immigration measures to help Turkish and Syrian temporary residents in Canada who may not be able to return home because of earthquake damage.
From March 29, 2023, Turkish and Syrian citizens can apply for free status extensions to study, work, or visit family. There will be an open path to getting a work permit in Canada for Turkish and Syrian citizens. With these changes, people from Turkey and Syria will be able to extend their temporary status in Canada and change streams.
Applicants for Canadian permanent resident visas who lost their passports or other travel documents because of the earthquakes will not have to provide a replacement. We will not charge fees for temporary passports, passports with limited validity, emergency travel documents, Canadian citizenship certificates, and permanent resident travel documents for Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are coming back from Turkey and Syria.
These new steps make it easier to give priority to international applications from earthquake victims. Priority is being given to applications for temporary and permanent residence from affected regions, including applications from refugees looking to resettle. Visitor visas can be applied for by the immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who want to visit their loved ones in Canada.
Canada also works with UN partners to provide shelter for refugees whose applications are still being processed while they go through the resettlement process in Canada. We will keep a close eye on the needs of each region and adjust our response to meet those needs.
