Date: July 7, 2023
Ottawa—The French language holds significant importance in Canada’s national identity, and it is our collective responsibility to foster an inclusive Canada where individuals can thrive in their preferred official language. Recognizing the need to bolster the vitality of French linguistic minority communities across the country, Canada has tailored its Express Entry system to provide a streamlined and efficient pathway for French-speaking immigrants. By prioritizing the invitation of French-speaking newcomers, the country aims to support economic growth through Francophone immigration outside of Quebec, thereby enriching and strengthening these communities.
On May 31, Minister Fraser announced important changes to the Express Entry system, introducing category-based selection to address specific labor shortages aligned with identified economic goals. This modification allows candidates with targeted work experience or French language proficiency to apply for permanent residence.
Today, Minister of Official Languages, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, on behalf of Minister Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced the initiation of the first Francophone round for category-based selection. This initiative focuses on attracting French-speaking newcomers to promote the French language and alleviate labor shortages in communities outside of Quebec.
The implementation of category-based selection demonstrates Canada’s commitment to attracting exceptional global talent and meeting the demand for French-speaking and bilingual workers, thereby supporting the economy while enriching the cultural and linguistic diversity of the communities where Francophone newcomers contribute. These category-based selection rounds will run alongside general invitation rounds throughout the year, with further details to be announced in the coming weeks.
In conclusion, Canada’s revamped Express Entry system is geared towards prioritizing French-speaking immigrants, thereby bolstering the French language, addressing labor shortages, and nurturing the cultural fabric of Francophone communities outside of Quebec.
