Canada Latest News: PGWP Extension 2023
International students with PGWPs that have expired or are about to expire may now apply for extensions of up to 18 months.
PGWP is typically awarded to an international student after they have completed their studies.
However, on March 17, 2023, IRCC Minister Sean Fraser issued an interim announcement allowing an 18-month extension for PGWPs that have expired or will expire in 2023.
Qualified applicants may submit an online application using their MyCIC account or GCKey between April 6, 2023 and May 20, 2023.
If their post-graduation work permit (PGWP) has recently expired or will expire in 2023, international students are eligible for an 18-month extension.
Candidates for the 2022 PGWP extension as well as international students whose PGWP has already run out in 2023 may submit an application for an additional 18-month work permit.
Even if they’ve gone over the allotted 90 days for restoration, people whose work permits have expired will still be able to change their status and receive temporary work authorization while their new work permit application is being processed.
What is PGWP:
PGWP stands for Post-Graduation Work Permit. It is a work permit issued by the Canadian government to international students who have completed their studies at a designated learning institution in Canada and who wish to gain work experience in Canada.
A Post-Graduation Work Permit allows international students to work in Canada for up to three years after completing their studies, depending on the length of their study program. For example, if a student completed a program of two years or less, they are eligible for a work permit of up to the same length as their program. If they completed a program of three years or more, they can receive a work permit of up to three years.
The PGWP is an open work permit, meaning that international students can work for any employer in any occupation in Canada, and they can change jobs as many times as they wish, as long as their work permit is valid.
To be eligible for a PGWP, international students must have graduated from a designated learning institution in Canada and have completed a program of study that is at least eight months long. They must also have maintained full-time student status throughout their study program and have completed their program of study. Additionally, they must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation that they have met the requirements for completing their program of study.
The PGWP is an excellent opportunity for international students to gain valuable work experience in Canada, which can help them qualify for permanent residency in Canada through various immigration programs.
