Canada announced PGWP extension. PGWP holders will be able to submit applications from April 6.

International graduates whose post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) have expired or are about to expire will be eligible for an additional or extended work permit to stay longer and gain more work experience for up to 18 months, according to Sean Fraser, the respected Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. International students and recent graduates can easily obtain a Canadian work permit through the Post-Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWP).

Starting April 6, 2023, PGWP holders can opt into a streamlined extension process to help Canada retain its highly skilled workforce.

Foreign nationals eligible for the PGWP facilitative measure in 2022 and whose PGWP expired in 2023 can apply for an 18-month work permit. After the 90-day grace period, those with expired work permits can reinstate their status and receive a temporary work permit while their new application is processed.

International graduates nearing the end of their PGWP are well-integrated into the Canadian labor market and contribute to Canada’s labor shortage. Eligible applicants will receive an additional work permit to continue working in Canada, gain experience, and prepare for permanent residence.

Graduates from other countries make up a significant portion of the population that will eventually become permanent residents. Every year, tens of thousands of people are able to successfully transition into permanent residence, including more than 157,000 in 2021, which was a record high, and nearly 95,000 in 2022, which was the second-highest total that had ever been recorded.
