Each year, Canada welcomes over 400,000 new immigrants to support the country’s social and economic success. Skilled workers are being welcomed by Canada to strengthen its own economy, family class immigrants, and refugees. A new Immigration Levels Plan is being released each year by the Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship, and Canada (IRCC) each year that is used to guide the country’s immigration operations.

More than 1.2 Million new immigrants is aimed to welcome by Canada over the next 3 years. In 2021, The IRCC has achieved its target and welcomed 401, 000 new immigrants. The following year – 2022, Canada’s target will rise to 411,000 new permanent residents. While in 2023, Canada will aim to welcome an additional 421,000 new immigrants.

You may be wondering, why does Canada need immigrants? Having a high level of immigration helps Canada’s economy strong. Canada is known to be one of the world’s lowest birth rates as well as one of the world’s oldest populations; as a result, this creates economic fiscal pressures. Having a low rate of natural population growth leads Canada to have a low rate of the labor force and economic growth. As a result, it is difficult for Canada to raise the taxes that they need to help support social spending on different services such as education, health care, and other important areas that provide a high standard of living in the country.

With that, Canada has been increasing its immigration levels to be able to help increase the country’s rate of population., labor force as well as economic growth. Canada depends on its immigration for the majority of the country’s population, labor force growth as well as the larger share of its economic growth. The importance has also increased due to the COVID-19, it weakened the economy of Canada in a short span of time and increased the spending of the government on social services. In addition to this, Canada’s birth rate fluctuates to its lowest point ever. Given that circumstance, Canada will moreover become dependent on immigration for the country’s population growth in the years to come.
