Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Revealed the New Immigration System Priorities of Canada
It was recently revealed by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that he has submitted new mandate letters to the cabinet, and the said letter is now being unveiled. The issued mandate letter is said to outline the priorities that the government expects the ministers to pursue during the span of time that the federal government is in power. With that, each minister along with their respective department must focus on pursuing the said priorities.
The issued mandate letter by the Prime Minister is the most important letter policy document as it guides Canada’s immigration system. The task of Sean Fraser, Canada’s new immigration minister as well as the Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship, and Canada to implement the agenda that Prime Minister Trudeau outlined to them.
Below is the summary of Canada’s new immigration priorities which the new immigration mandate letter revealed:
- Processing of applications must be reduced and to address all the delays due to the impact of COVID-19
- Create more permanent residence through Express Entry for all international students as well as temporary foreign workers.
- Introduce online applications for family reunification and implement a program that will provide temporary residence to spouses as well as children living abroad while they are waiting for the processing o their PR application.
- Create a new Municipal Nominee Program. The main purpose of this program is to help promote the broader distribution of immigration across Canada. Initially, it was outlined as a priority after the 2019 election, however, due to the pandemic, it was delayed.
- Another delayed priority due to the pandemic, the waiving of Canadian citizenship application fees.
- Sean Fraser is asked to work with the Employment Minister and establish a Trusted Employer system for all companies in Canada that hire temporary foreign workers. In addition to this, Fraser is asked to simplify work permit renewal, sustain the two-week standard processing, and also establish an employer hotline as a way to improve the Global Talent Stream of their Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
- Construct existing pilot programs to identify how to regularize status for all the undocumented workers within Canada.
- Continue on working with Quebec to be able to support French-language knowledge of immigrants living in the province as well as to continue promoting the national Francophone immigration strategy
- Carry out Canada’s goal to resettle a total of 40,000 Afghan refugees
