Citizenship Application is Now Online To Those Who Have Representatives

 In Blog

It was announced recently that Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada have expanded their online portal and included applications from all individuals who have a representative. The said online citizenship application portal is open to all applicants who have a representative; however, their representatives will not be able to apply on their behalf until next year.

It is mentioned that the applicants still need to complete, sign and submit their applications themselves and to not share access to their account with anyone and that includes their representatives. In addition to this, the IRCC also mentioned that the representatives cannot apply yet on behalf of an applicant, however, they can still provide the necessary advice with regards to the completion of the application and be able to communicate with the IRCC on behalf of the applicant once the online application is submitted.

This recent update is due to IRCC’s plan of modernizing the citizenship application system. Since August, single applicants have already been able to apply for their citizenship online. Also, Canada has recently started accepting proof of citizenship applications online, wherein all foreign-born children of a Canadian citizen are permitted to prove their right to citizenship online.

The IRCC said that they will be opening the following online applications in 2022:

  • Minors
  • Families
  • Representatives to apply on behalf of their clients
  • Individuals who are declaring residence outside of Canada as a Crown servant or having a crown servant family member
