Here’s How You Can Sponsor A Relative for Canadian Immigration
Are you thinking of sponsoring a family member for Canadian immigration but have no knowledge on who and how to sponsor? We got you covered! Here is a brief rundown on how you can sponsor your relative like your brother, sister, or any other family members to migrate to Canada.
Over 100,000 new family class immigrates per year are welcomed by Canada. As many have known, a lot of these new immigrants arrive in Canada through the category of Spouses, Partners, and Children; meanwhile, the second biggest number arrive through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). It was quite unknown, but the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) does allow other family members to be sponsored going to Canada under very specific situations.
To be an eligible sponsor, one must be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered under Canada’s Indian Act; and must also be at least 18 years old and older. Most of the sponsored individuals are either their spouse, partner, parents, or grandparents. But take note that there are also two other options for whom you can sponsor:
Orphaned sister, brother, nephew, niece, or grandchild
- As per the IRCC, if the below conditions are met, one can sponsor an orphaned sister, brother, nephew, niece, or grandchild:
- The person to be sponsored is a relative either by blood or through adoption
- The person to be sponsored is not either married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship
- The person to be sponsored must be below the age of 18 years old
- Both of their parents have passed away
Other relatives
Another option is you can sponsor one relative that is either related by blood or adoption at any age given that all of the conditions listed below are met:
- The sponsor does not have any relatives that are either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered in the Indian Act
- The sponsor does not have any living relative that they can sponsor like a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, child, parent, or an orphaned sister, brother, nephew, niece, or grandchild
This sponsorship application process has two steps; you apply to sponsor your relative and then they apply for permanent residence. Note that both applications must be submitted to the IRCC at the same time. Below are the guidelines provided by the IRCC on how an applicant must prepare and submit their application.:
- Carefully read and understand the application guidelines
- provide all requested documents and evidence in your application. You will need to submit evidence such as proof of income and sign legal declarations such as committing to financially support your relative upon their arrival in Canada
- confirm you and your relatives meet the eligibility criteria
- honestly answer all the questions
- make sure that all the required health and security checks of your relatives are complete
- pay all applicable fees
