Quebec Sets Immigrant Admissions Target for 2022
October 28, 2021 – Quebec released its immigration plan for the year 2022 and mentioned that the province could admit up to 52,500 new permanent residents; the majority of the percentage of at least 65% of the supposed newcomers are expected to arrive in Quebec through the economic immigration program.
In 2022, most of the newcomers in Quebec will be through the province’s economic immigration programs and this includes the Quebec Experience Program (QEP) as well as Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP). As part of the Quebec Immigration planning for the period of 2021 – 2022, a public consultation that was held in the summer of 2019; it is said that the target plan discussed during those planning periods will be maintained.
To reach the new admissions target that was failed to meet by the federal government in 2020 due to the COVID-19, Quebec sets an admission target of 49,500 to 52,500 immigrants for the year 2022 across all the categories of the province with an additional 18,000 more admissions for the target to be met. With all these being said, there will be more than 70,000 newcomers that could be admitted to Quebec by the year 2022.
Due to the 1991 agreement that was signed with Canada, Quebec became the one in charge of setting its own target for admission. Each year, the immigration levels plan is presented by the Quebec Immigration Department and specifies the number of new permanent residents that Quebec aims to welcome in the coming year together with the categories through which the newcomers will be admitted. Comparted to the past two years, the announced new figures show an increase in the province’s immigration target; this is due to the assurance that Quebec’s present governing party, the Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) wherein the province must gradually increase the number of newcomers in Quebec following the reduced admission targets in 2019.
