Are you a Canadian or a permanent resident in Canada who wanted to sponsor a spouse living in the Philippines? Good news! Canadian immigration now has an outline of the sponsorship process for Canadians who have spouses and common-law partners who live in the Philippines.

One must be eligible before sponsoring their spouse for Canadian immigration. Candidate must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, must be 18 years old in age or above and most of all must be able to financially provide for their spouse, dependent children, and themselves.

Mentioned above are some of the things that determine the candidate’s eligibility for the sponsorship. From the aforementioned qualifications, requirements for sponsorship can go deep and specific, for example; only those with citizenship status can sponsor their partners from outside of Canada. In connection to this, the candidate is required to show in their submitted application that once their spouse gets a permanent residency status, they still plan to settle in Canada. To make it clear, the candidate cannot sponsor their spouses from outside Canada if their status is a permanent resident.

The most important qualification for this sponsorship is money. The candidate must not be receiving any social assistance other than disability being the reason for it. Nonetheless, a candidate may still be allowed to sponsor if they are receiving either maternal, parental, or sickness benefits. However, benefits such as employment insurance and federal training allowances are not acceptable as a source of income.

Will your spouse be eligible to be sponsored? If your spouse is over the age of 18 and is able to tick by security, background, and medical checks, they might be eligible for sponsorship. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will process the immigration applications and validate if your spouse is acceptable for sponsorship.
